When to Send Out Your Wedding Invitations

You’ve created your guest list, sent out save the dates, and now you’re ready to start designing your official invitations. Those are all moments brimming with anticipation and excitement, but as the invitation designs take shape, a critical question arises: when should you send out those cherished invitations? Today, I’m here to guide you through this pivotal timeline, ensuring that your invitations take center stage in your guests' hearts - and schedules.
Here are 3 key thing I want you to keep in mind:
 

  • What is the date of your wedding? 

  • Where is your wedding taking place and is this location far from where a majority of your guests are located? 

  • Does your guest list include a lot of individuals with complex schedules or families? 

Your Wedding Date

If you’re getting married in January, February, or March, try to send out the invitations before the holiday season in December starts. Why? During this time, mailboxes are filled with holiday greetings and cards sent from all directions. But, it is also a time when cards could get lost. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen to yours!

So what should you do instead?

Aim to send your invitations out by the end of October (which means you should start working on them by August).

Your Wedding Location

Think about WHERE you’re having your wedding. If most of your guests live nearby, they don’t need to plan for travel or a place to stay. But if it’s a destination faraway for everyone, send the invitations 6-8 months before.

Here's the why: your guests aren't just penciling in a wedding; they're crafting a journey. 

The path from their doorstep to your celebration involves flights, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, and a number of potentially complex logistics. By offering a substantial lead time, you're giving them the opportunity to secure flights without feeling the budget pinch and book their preferred accommodations.

Your Wedding Guests

Think about your guest list. Are they busy people or families with a lot of members to coordinate? Consider your guests’ response time (to regular correspondence) before sending invitations. You don’t want to chase people after the RSVP deadline!

The reason for keeping your date, location, and makeup of your guests in mind when deciding when to send out your wedding invitations is to create peace in the planning process.
